NFT. Prints. Sneakers. Merch.

Art Agenda hosts painter Nyoman Masriadi and exhibition partners EquatorNFT and Get It Studio to present Wake Up! Get it?, a multi-faceted exhibition of Nyoman Masriadi’s sold-out Samuro’s Judgment NFT collection, signed monoprints, limited-edition sneakers and sculptures all revolving around the renowned Indonesian artist’s Old Master Samuro character.

Samuro is an action hero of Masriadi’s creation. He first appeared in his paintings Hero vs Hero and Godlike, both completed in 2013. From 2016 onwards, the character acquired ‘Old Master’ status in paintings. Once a ninja, Samuro became scarred from battle and morally ambiguous.

Those who know Masriadi will know the painter to be a long-time avid gamer, from which the Old Master Samuro character was inspired. Bringing the character to life in animated digital form was a natural development, encouraged by his son’s interest in NFTs. The meeting of interests in this father-and-son story is echoed in the father-and-son duos that make up exhibition partners EquatorNFT and Get It Studio, and their respective digital immigrant- digital native stories.

Wake Up! – Samuro’s Judgment

Samuro’s Judgment #47, #9, #2, signed monoprints, 2022

Samuro’s Judgement is Masriadi’s first NFT collection in the Wake Up! NFT project. The collection sold out within two days of its launch in Art Jakarta on 26 August 2022. Developed in collaboration with EquatorNFT, the Wake Up! project will see two more collections to be launched in 2023/24.

Available in a limited collection of 50 unique variations, Samuro’s Judgment NFT is a 10-second animated sequence that allows co-creation by the collector. Presenting the Samuro character with his katana unsheathed, the Old Master contemplates the viewer like a crouching tiger assessing a prey. Is the viewer a friend, or a foe, or fluff? The viewer is momentarily held in suspense as Samuro decides.

From Wake Up! to Wake Up! Get It?

Following the success of the Wake Up! NFT project, Masriadi makes his foray into the sneakers world in partnership with Get It Studio, a newly established web-based entity dealing in collectible sneakers.

Sneaker collaborations have become commonplace in the global footwear industry thanks to brands like Nike, Adidas, and New Balance. Working with Singapore-based custom design outfit Absolute Artisans, Masriadi and Get It Studio are producing three exquisite custom limited-edition lines of Nike Air Force 1 sneakers inspired by Masriadi’s Old Master Samuro.

Samuro Mantap, digital prototype, 2022

Samuro Mantap, the first pair of custom sneakers to be unveiled, is an inspired realisation of the battle-scarred feet and bandages of Old Master Samuro onto a pair of black leather Nike
Air Force 1 High. The other two custom-designed and produced sneakers titled Friend Foe and Defender Conqueror will be unveiled during the exhibition.

In conjunction with this partnership with Masriadi, Get It Studio will also present a collection of sneakers that highlight significant points in the history of sneaker collaborations.

The exhibition will be rounded off with a range of exclusive and limited Wake Up! Get It? merchandise that will allow one to embody Samuro. Get it?

About Masriadi
Nyoman Masriadi (b. 1973, Bali) is a storyteller of human drama. Portraying the human condition with wry wit, in which the dark-skinned buffed body as weaponised metaphor of manly strength and a canvas for irony is a Masriadi signature persona, his are portrayals that mingle candour with comic hyperbole, parody with fantasy.

A leading Asian contemporary artist, his meteoric rise to international acclaim has made him an artist to follow since the early 2000s. In 2008, the Singapore Art Museum bestowed upon Masriadi his first solo exhibition Black is My Last Weapon. In 2013, Asia Society (NY) inaugurated their Asia Arts Game Changer Award with Masriadi among its first honourees. That same year, the Financial Times called him “an artist of international significance”, making much of the change in circumstances that overnight success had brought. In 2008, The Man from Bantul fetched US$1 million at Sotheby’s, a record doubly remarkable because it set a new benchmark for contemporary Southeast Asian art during the onset of the global financial crisis.
